Role and Responsibilities
The Fiber Design Engineer is tasked with designing the fiber optic network in accordance with industry, corporate and customer standards. The Fiber Design Engineer is responsible for the following task:
Attend kick-off meetings if new backbone, lateral, and/or riser fiber is required
Review sales engineering design and determine backbone fiber route
Develop, read, and manage fiber splice documents, including fiber splice diagrams, OTDR, and Power Meter readings
Fiber Engineering responsible for all backbone splicing & end/end testing
Obtain Quote/Bids from contractors for all backbone splicing & end/end testing
Manage vendors/contractors during splicing & testing of circuits
Submit all necessary Change management notifications and adhere to field activity policies and guidelines
Fiber Splicing and Network Capacity Monitoring
Review weekly schedules of upcoming splice locations to determine common splice locations that can be combined to avoid multiple visits to same enclosure in the same week
Submit and update all necessary Change Management notifications adhering to all network activity policies
Review capacity reports and plan network augments on high utilization fiber routes
Participate in Network Planning meetings
Emergency Response
Fiber Design Engineers are responsible for all emergency and trouble responses. All engineers participate in On-Call. On-Call is handled and assigned monthly.
Respond immediately to all incidents and/or trouble tickets related to a problem or an emergency identified to be in the physical fiber infrastructure
Work jointly with the NOC, and Operations to mobilize necessary repair crews to isolate and restore any fiber outages
Upon completion of repair, review all pertinent information and documentation of any allocation changes as a result of the repair
Requirements
Ability to understand mapping programs and key identifiers in a fiber optic network
Ability to read and understand Engineering construction/redline prints
Ability to read and understand Power Meter and OTDR reports
Operate an OTDR, light source, and power meter
Strong interpersonal, organizational and communications skills
